CLAEISSENS Pieter the Younger (b. ca. 1540, Brugge, d. 1623, Brugge) Nationality : Flemish
The Claeissens family monopolized official painting in Bruges with their enormous output in the late 16th century. The most important members of the family are Pieter the Elder (1499/1500-1576), Pieter the Younger (c. 1540-1623) and his brother Antoon (c. 1538-1613). Both sons were city painters at one time or another. All three painted in the same, rather wooden and stereotyped manner. They continued the local tradition that derived from the style of Benson and Isenbrant but their paintings were executed in a more modern way; more adapted to Pourbus.
