DICKINSON Preston (1891-1930) Nationality : American

Dickinson, Preston (1891-1930). American painter. He was born in New York and studied at the Art Students League there, but he regarded the five years he spent in Europe, 1910-15, as his real artistic education. In Paris he was particularly influenced by the structural features of Cezanne's work and by the high-keyed colour of the Fauves, but in the 1920s his work became less experimental as he became associated with the Precisionists. Like others of the group, he favored subjects that were adapted to representation in terms of semi-geometrical design, in particular the machine (Industry, Whitney Museum, New York, c. 1924). He died very suddenly in Spain.
